Nahal Taninim / Wādī az Zarqā / Krokodelion
DESCRIPTION
PROJECT FILE
Taninim Stream (or Nahal Taninim, lit. “Crocodile Stream” or “Alligator Stream”) is a perennial stream that originates in Ramot Menashe, between Dalia and Ein HaShofet. The stream flows into the Mediterranean Sea near the fishing village Jisr az-Zarqa and Tel Taninim (“Crocodile Mound,” also known as Krokodelion Polis).
Home to diverse flora and fauna, the stream has been the source of much speculation and curiosity: were there ever any crocodiles or alligators in the stream? And if so, where had they come from? Will they ever return? Who are the people who have been living by the stream for generations, and who (if anyone) will live there in the future?
How has climate change affected the stream and the species that live in it? How will it affect them in the future? How have the waters of the stream been exploited by humans throughout history, from ancient Rome to the fish farms of Ma’agan Michael? Will humans continue to exploit its waters? Will the swamps that used to be there ever return? What will happen to this area when the climate crisis reaches its peak? What will happen after? If the effects of the climate crisis diminish the human presence near the stream and the human influence on the area, how will nature respond?
