PADLab:
Post Anthropocentric
Design Lab

The design laboratory for the post Anthropocene in Shenkar enables individuals and groups to internalize nature’s perspective, imagine new possibilities for nature during and after the climate crisis, decode the meanings of these possibilities and communicate them to the public, educators, experts, and decision-makers.

Partners

PADLab is part of the collaboration between Shenkar and the program of Information Experience Design at The Royal College of Art (RCA) London, UK. Methodologies used at PADLab were developed by PADLab in partnership with The program of Information Experience Design at The RCA, where Shenkar staff learned about the POD venture — Participatory Ocean-Sensitive Design. Our insights and takeaways from the POD venture serves as the starting point for developing methodologies for use at PADLab.
Danielle Barrios-O'Neill
Head of Program, Information Experience Design RCA

A researcher and practitioner in information experience design, with an interest in combining analog and digital materials to produce experiences of transformation. She is especially interested in the capacity of unconventional forms of interaction and social world-building to inform societal and planetary futures. She has published in journals as diverse as Textual Practice, Pedagogy and Futures, on topics related to experience design and societal change.

Charlotte Jarvis
Research Tutor IED RCA

Charlotte Jarvis is an artist and lecturer working at the intersection of art and science, with extensive experience in generating unconventional interactions and social experiences through performance design. She conducts cutting-edge and speculative practice that has direct applicability to scientific research, most recently contributing DNA through a process documented in Nature, and collaborating regularly with scientific researchers at multiple institutions in and outside the UK.

Carolina Ramirez-Figueroa
Senior Tutor IED RCA

A senior Lecturer at IED RCA and Associate Lecturer at Interdisciplinary Studios at the MA in Biodesign at University of the Arts London. Carolina’s research explores the challenges and opportunities found when living systems are understood as a form of matter for design. She is interested in understanding the cultures, practices, tools and economies of working and designing with living systems at different scales, ranging from experiences, products, architecture and urban ecologies. Carolina's work also looks at imagining and delivering possible futures to challenge and provoke discourses of future technological, social, cultural, political, economic and environmental issues.

Nirit Binyamini Ben-Meir
Associate Lecturer IED RCA

Nirit is an artist, designer and researcher doing her PhD at the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence, based at the Queen Mary University of London. She is an Associate Lecturer in Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art.
Her work explores the interconnection between society, technology, and ecology. Nirit’s main research interests are around More-Than-Human Interactions and the integration of living organisms into digital interactions. She investigates how these hybrid interactions may influence people's attitudes towards ecological stewardship and their perceived accountability.
