The jackal, part of the Canidae family,
lives in natural areas near residential areas — much like Yarkon Park — in
dens and crevices, as well as in open fields. While monogamous and
territorial, jackals often live in small packs. The jackal has a keen sense
of smell, which it uses to map its environment and analyze what is happening
in it. This ability helps it thrive and survive as part of a pack in an urban
environment.
The jackal is an omnivore and feeds on
carrion, rodents and human food leftovers. With its increasing dependence on
human society, the jackal is no longer the hunter and predator it once was.
It has moved away from nature and closer to the city. Nowadays, jackals are
often seen confidently and freely roaming in close proximity to humans and
other animals, and even in residential neighborhoods, where they search for
leftovers.
With rising sea level and upcoming
floods, Yarkon Park will change considerably. What remains of the park will
be covered by massive puddles, and humans will move away from the area. To
survive, the jackal will further enhance its scent-mapping ability.
