to the Common Reed from the Taninim Stream
The common reed grows rapidly and spreads
quickly, with tall stems above ground and massive lateral root systems below.
It thrives in groups and quickly dominates its surroundings, spreading widely
near water sources. Rising sea levels may increase the water salinity in the reed’s wetland habitat — the western part of the Yarkon River — posing a threat to the reed in the area. To survive, the reed will transform into a new species — the saltwater reed. It will develop the ability to filter saltwater through its stomata and excrete it onto the plant’s surface. As a result, the new saltwater reed will be strikingly beautiful — white and crystalline. However, its beauty will be deceptive. Combined with the high salinity, the reed's invasive nature will fundamentally alter the landscape of the Yarkon River area and create new, challenging livi |
